Surrounded by a radiant blaze of wisdom fire, he obliterates the forces that obscure the path to awakening. His wrathful countenance reveals the piercing clarity of awakened mind, dissolving ego and fear.
Bearing three faces that cleave through the three root poisons, he holds the wisdom dagger that strikes through ignorance. Aflame with fierce power and crowned with wings, the great Heruka manifests as the remover of obstacles, the destroyer of both inner and outer demons.

This thangka portrays Vajrakilaya, rendered in the traditional “Nag-thang style”, in which the entire surface is painted black and illuminated with exquisite lines of pure gold. Soft gradations of natural pigments further enhance the composition, infusing it with depth and an aura of mystical luminosity.
Unlike standard Himalayan thangka paintings executed on cotton canvas, this piece is painted on silk—a material traditionally used in classical Japanese painting.
Each line is drawn with precision, conveying every detail with clarity—from the deity’s three wrathful faces to the intricately wrought bone ornaments adorning his body, shaped in forms such as dharma wheels and vajras. The golden sun disk upon which the deity stands shimmers with fine patterns revealed through meticulous agate-stone polishing.
