This thangka of Amitāyus is rendered in the traditional Tibetan style known as mar thang, where the entire canvas is painted in rich vermilion. The deity’s body is painted with cinnabar, and halo around him is rendered in radiant azurite blue, deep malachite green, and adorned with pure gold pigment. The gold-painted areas, such as the outer edge of the halo and the ornaments, have been carefully polished to produce a brilliant metallic sheen, creating a vivid contrast with the surrounding colors. Around Amitāyus are numerous smaller forms of himself, delicately drawn in fine gold lines. This compositional technique, not only enhances the deity’s blessings but also symbolizes the infinite manifestations and skillful means through which Amitāyus benefits sentient beings.
