Dewachen

- The Pure Realm of Compassion, Abode of Lord of the Lotus Family -

Dewachen, the Western Pure Land of Amitābha Buddha, is a realm of serene peace, untouched by suffering.

Set against misty, ethereal mountains in the distance, vibrant lotuses bloom in radiant profusion, rising from waters imbued with the eight sacred virtues—each symbolizing purity and the spiritual aspiration of those reborn into this sacred realm.

Within this sacred realm, all beings dwell in harmony as sorrow and delusion fall away.

Set against misty, ethereal mountains in the distance, crystal-clear waters bloom with radiant lotuses.

A realm of peace and awakening, where sincere faith leads to rebirth and liberation.

This artwork was inspired by an imagined vision of Amitābha Buddha’s Pure Land.

The lower half of the painting, almost entirely filled with lotus leaves, is rendered in various shades of natural malachite pigments. These are enhanced with subtle shading in natural indigo and a plant-based dye known as shun-khen, traditionally used in Tibet.

In contrast, the mountains and clouds in the background are rendered in delicate washes of pale Sumi-ink and genuine indigo, creating a misty, distant atmosphere in the upper half of the composition.

This interplay between the ethereal lightness above and the calm radiance of the richly pigmented lotus flowers and leaves below adds depth and dimensionality to the entire composition.
