In this painting, Shakyamuni Buddha—the founder of Buddhism—is portrayed seated in the vajra posture upon a richly adorned throne. Unlike traditional thangkas, the background is rendered with elegant simplicity: the sky and earth are softly hued, free of clouds or mountains, while lotus flowers—some in full bloom, others still budding—rise softly behind the Lord Buddha, rendered in delicate pastel tones. In contrast to the serene background, the entire body of Buddha Shakyamuni is painted in gold, the sacred animals, the offerings, and the ornate throne are rendered with attentive detail and enriched with refined application of pure gold, highlighting the moment of his awakening.
