Introduction
―― Atelier NISHI ――
Atelier NISHI is the studio of Yoji Nishi, a Japanese thangka painter based in Spain who carries on the Karma Gadri tradition — one of the primary classical schools of Tibetan thangka painting.
Rooted in the rich heritage of Himalayan Buddhist art, he depicts the diverse forms of Buddhist deities in their correct iconographic expressions as described in the Buddhist scriptures. Through the meticulous creation of traditional thangka paintings, he aims to produce works that help viewers feel the blessings and virtues embodied by these deities.
Each work is crafted using traditional materials and techniques with deep respect for both spiritual and artistic integrity. In addition to classical thangka paintings, the studio also produces works using traditional Japanese methods, engages in the coloring of Buddhist statues and ritual implements, and creates original works that go beyond the boundaries of traditional thangka art.
―― Our Reproductions ――
The reproductions offered by Atelier NISHI are high-quality, faithful renditions of original thangka works, produced with meticulous attention to detail. We aim to recreate the dignified presence of the blissful fields of deities in Tibetan Buddhism, allowing the sacred atmosphere of these paintings to be experienced more widely.
In Tibetan thangka painting, colors are traditionally derived from natural sources. Finely ground minerals yield solid tones in a wide range of hues, while plant-based dyes offer transparent layers that create delicate shadings. These colors are rich, profound, and serene. Complementing them are intricate details rendered in genuine gold, conveying the majestic presence and dignity of the enlightened beings depicted.
Some of the original thangkas from which we produce our reproductions are the result of hundreds, even thousands, of hours of devoted craftsmanship. The perfection in every detail contributes to the overall harmony and spiritual completeness of the work. We believe our reproductions preserve these qualities—the color of rich natural pigments and the subtle details of the originals.
We hope our reproductions will become a meaningful presence in the daily meditation of Buddhist practitioners, and that they may inspire all who encounter this sacred art to develop an interest in Buddhism and open a path toward positive connections.
